How to register

To register as a user and activate all features of VolleyScout you have to purchase a registration code through PalmGear HQ's website. In page "How to have it" you'll find the detailed information. Once made the purchase you will receive by email the code to activate the software.

The code I received doesn't work.

The code you received is based on the username you entered in your handheld. If the name you reported in the purchase form is even a little different from the one contained in your handheld ("Marco" instead of "Marco." with the dot) the code will not be recognized and the program will not be activated. Please be careful to enter the right Username when purchasing. You can find your Username launching the Hotsync application on your handheld and reading the name you find in the upper right corner.
Send me an email with the correct name. You'll immediately receive back a new registration code.

I purchased the program, but still haven't received the code.

Sometimes PalmGear's procedures are not so fast, and they don't send me quickly your purchase data. Normal timing is some hours, but in some cases they can delay up to 2 or 3 days.
If you hurry and need quickly your code, try to fill in the purchase form again, stating it's a "resending" request (there's a dedicated field at the end of the form). You will not be requested with other money; only a new request to PalmGear will be made.

Can I register without a credit card?

PalmGear also takes phone, fax and ordinary mail orders. Visit their site for further information.

Once registered, will I receive a floppy, a CD or something else?

No. VolleyScout and its manuals are so compact that they can be easily sent through internet in some seconds, therefore making ordinary mail something extremely improper for timing and cost. You can download the software from this site (Downloads), from PalmGear and from many other sites in internet.

I'm already registered. How can I obtain the new version?

You can download the new version (1.5) from this site going to page Downloads.
Please note that the code you already have in no more valid. Versions 1.2 and 1.3 registered users can obtain the new code FOR FREE sending an email to volleyscout@genie.it stating their name and handheld's Username.

Which is the right procedure to install the software?

  1. The software is downloadable from this site (look at the Download page) or from PalmGear of from many internet sites (launch a search from any search engine looking for "VolleyScout").
  2. What you get is a .ZIP file, that is a compressed file which you have to decompress to obtain VolleyScout program files. To do this, use a decompressing software like WinZip or others, which you find in internet.
  3. Decompressed files are:
    - Manuals (readable with a web-browser like Microsoft Internet Explorer) which contain information on how to install and use VolleyScout;
    - PocketC.prc (not present in version 1.5) which is a software that lets VolleyScout work.
    - VolleyScout.prc which is the real program.
  4. First of all, read the manuals. They will help you understand installation and use of the software.
  5. To install VolleyScout in your handheld you need to load PocketC.prc (not necessary in version 1.5) and VolleyScout.prc on your handheld's memory using the installation software of your handheld (like Installer of PalmOS systems). Often this is as easy as double-clicking on the files you want to install.
  6. Once installed the files, tap on VolleyScout icon on the handheld (it's a volley ball). The first time you launch it, it will tell you that you're a not registered user. Go to the INFO menu, select REGISTER and enter the code you received. If the code was correct, a welcome message will appear, otherwise either you have mistakenly entered the code (try again) or the code is wrong since you have not stated the correct username in the purchase form.
In this case, please read the answer to the question: The code I received doesn't work.

What shall I do with ZIP files I dowloaded?

Computer files with .zip suffix contain compressed programs and/or documents. Compression is used to reduce files size and allow quick sending through internet.
Decompression programs are very diffused. The most famous is WinZip, which you can find at Winzip Computing web site.
Once decompressed, the .zip file will "explode" in many files: VolleyScout (a .prc file which you have to install in your handheld) and the manuals (usually .htm files, readable with a web browser like Microsoft Internet Explorer).

What is PocketC?
Is it necessary to let VolleyScout work?

PocketC is the language used to create VolleyScout. PocketC.prc is the interpreter that lets VolleyScout (ver. 1.2 e 1.3) work on your handheld, and it is therefore necessary to install it together with VolleyScout. Please note that from version 1.5 PocketC.prc is no more needed and is not enclosed in VolleyScout ZIP file.

I have a version previous to 1.5.
Ho do I install the new one?
Will I lose my players and scores data?

VolleyScout 1.5 was created thinking also to people which already uses the software, and is therefore able to recognize previous installations, recover data from existing archives and reformat data to use them with the new version.
So, if you want to recover your data, install 1.5 version over previous ones without deleting VolleyScout (old version) and PocketC.

How can I delete an action I wrongly entered?

Versions up to 1.3 don't have this feature.
Version 1.5 introduces the UNDO button. Tapping it you will be able to delete last entered action.

I can't manage the Libero, because substitutions are too fast and frequent.

In versions up to 1.3 substitutions was made going through menus, slowing down the work.
Version 1.5 solves this problem and lets you substitute a player only tapping his name in the main grid, and choosing the substitute in the following screen (two taps and done).

How many players can I manage?

VolleyScout 1.5 can manage an unlimited number of teams, each one with up to 12 players.
Previous versions can manage only one team with 12 players.
Future versions will be able to manage teams with up to 15 players or more.

Can I manage 2 teams at the same time?

VolleyScout 1.5 has a new feature to save and reload an unlimited number of teams. Scouting is possible for one team at once.

Why this way of scouting?

Because this method was suggested and used by Julio Velasco, coach and world champion at head of Italian National Volley Team.

Does VolleyScout exists for Windows? And for PocketPC?

VolleyScout runs only on PalmOS systems.
For the time being, other operating systems versions are not expected, given that PalmOS systems features are superior to concurrent operating systems (costs, weight, battery life, performances).

Is VolleyScout available in other languages?

The program is available in Italian, English and Portuguese (thanks to JP Katzenstein).
If you're interested in other languages and if you're disposed to translate the software (and even the manual, too...) you can let me know this by email. Usually the "reward" for this work is a free registration code for the software. I hope it will interest you.

How much memory does VolleyScout use?

The software uses about 85 Kbytes of your handheld's memory. This amount will not grow with use, whatever is the number of actions you enter.
